Cross section (not to scale) of upper part of the Moon depicting the magma ocean concept resulting in the formation of anorthositic crust and mafic mantle based on part melting of the Moon. Subsequent processes resulting in the formation of secondary crust (mare basalt, Mg spinel anorthosite) are shown schematically (modified after [79]). Other models depicting total melting of the Moon have been discussed by Pritchard and Stevenson [46] and Elardo et al. [48].
